A Curious History part 18
Haley watched the lilies blow in the cool early October wind for a long moment and laid the shard of mirror down on the vanity table and pushed the window open to let in a cool blast of air that sent her hair whipping back over her shoulders and in her face.
She smiled slightly at this and stepped out on the window ledge despite being on the second story and gripped the thickest branch she could reach before swinging out onto it and continuing on to climb the tree until she reached the top, watching the lighting in the distance as a storm approached. When she'd found a good footing she stood between a fork in the tree and looked out at the rest of the city, hugging the right limb slightly as it began to sprinkle.
Chance watched curiously from his window, simply standing with his arms crossed before sighing and prying his window open, climbing the tree with a little more ease and hoisting himself up around the left limb beside her.
Her attention flickered to him for a moment but quickly turned back to the storm.
Neither of them said anything for a few long moments and the rain began to fall a bit heavier now.
"You're going to get wet." She said distantly, still not looking at him.
"Like I care." He scoffed and they were silent for a few more minutes.
"It's incredible isn't it?" she asked after a long moment, "Something so untamed; so unreal?"
"Something so destructive but beautiful." He finished.
She nodded with a slight smile despite the rain drenching them now.
"One of the few things in life you can't control and can never completely understand." She smiled slightly at this, "They're kind of like people. They have no real reason, they're destructive, chaotic, but they never start out that way. They all start out as gentle as a breeze."
"One little change in speed and direction and the wind turns into a tornado." He said in a slightly subdued tone of voice, swinging around the limb so that he stood directly next to her, seeming to understand exactly what she was saying but taking it to mean something for himself as well.
She nodded solemnly and they stood there for another long moment, listening to the thunder as it seemed to resonate in their bones.
"I killed my best friend when I was 10." He said after a long moment, "I didn't mean to. We used to live just outside of Chicago. My mom was screaming at my dad again because he forgot to pay the land lord and was drunk again. She said she was leaving him for the had to be 17th time and I wanted to get out of the house so I snuck over to my friend Tucker's house across the street and asked him to come on an "adventure" with me." He laughed wryly at this as if it made him sick, "Tucker was terrified of just about everything. He didn't want to go. He thought we'd get attacked by a hobo. So I told him I'd take my dad's gun with us and that if anything jumped out at us I'd shoot it. He still didn't want to go but I called him a chicken and he agreed so I stole my dad's gun off his nightstand and we went downtown and pretended to shoot alligators in the sewer. Problem was… we weren't the only things down there. A raccoon jumped out at us and I freaked out and pulled the trigger and ended up shooting Tucker. I freaked out and left him there, ran home to my dad in tears and instead of beating the crap out of me or calling the police he put me in the car and we came here. Moved in with my Uncle Tom and left everything from our old life back there. Dad started drinking more and started doing "favors" for my uncle to support us. Now he practically owns the entire city." He laughed wryly.
"What "gentle breeze" brought you here?" he finally asked after a long moment.
Haley stared out at the sky for a long moment, thinking before finally answering.
"I watched my dad die. The details are a bit hazy. I don't remember much. I think I lived in Gotham but I could be wrong. After my father's death they sent me into foster "care" to live with an older couple named Don and Penny. They kept me locked in the basement for almost 3 years. When I finally escaped… I burned the house down and made sure no one made it out alive. I tried to start over in a new town but Lilly wouldn't drop the subject. Curiosity killed the cat in her case and five other people died in the process before I met your dad on the first train out of there." She said solemnly, "It's been a long week." She laughed wryly, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Chance looked at her with genuine compassion now and wrapped his arm around her and she rested her head on his chest as he rubbed her shoulder comfortingly before a flash of lighting shocked them both into nearly falling out of the tree. One of the bigger limbs facing away from the house cracked and split away from the tree in a blackened mess.
"We should probably head in now." He said in shock after a moment and looked over at her to see a small smile grace her lips before she kissed him and ducked in through the window once more and he followed suit into his room.
When they were both inside he shut the window and immediately pulled her into another kiss, holding her to him. She leaned close to him, standing on her toes to reach him as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back. After several moments she finally slid back down to the balls of her feet however and they simply stood and stared at one another in almost awe before she finally cast her gaze down shyly and turned for the door and stopped.
"Hey Chance?" she asked after a moment.
"Yeah?" he asked, a bit confused but contented nonetheless.
"You wouldn't happen to have any pajamas would you? These and my mismatched hospital clothes are the only things I have with me." She explained in a slightly embarrassed tone and he smirked slightly.
"Tell you what… I'll give you some PJs if you change in here." He smirked and she rolled her eyes but grinned mischievously.
"Ok." She agreed with a smirk and he nearly choked in shock before she laughed at him and shoved him out the door and locked it behind him.
"Hey! We had a deal!" he stammered in mock outrage.
She laughed now. "Exactly! You said I had to change in your room. You didn't say you had to be in it with me." She laughed and began rummaging around in his drawers before finding his pajama drawer and a stack of magazines, "Nice magazines by the way." She smirked before finally pulling out a shrunken green baseball jersey and a pair of sweatpants with a long drawstring which she promptly tightened to her fitting and began rolling the legs halfway up to her knee so that they wouldn't drag on the ground.
When she was finally finished she hummed a little and smirked as she opened the door and stepped passed him.
"Night Chance." She said softly with a smile and he smiled back at her.
"Night Chloe."
